Talking about Sports with your Parents

The best way to talk to your parents about wanting to try new things is to express your interests in a positive manner. You certainly don't want them to think that you are just doing it as a means of rebellion against their wishes, so before you sit down for this talk, take some time and get the facts about sports.

What is it that you want to play? What position, what are the risks, what kind of equipment needs to be purchased and what will be supplied to team mates. How often are your practices, and how will those practices affect your school work /schedule. Is there transportation to the games or is it something you or your parent would have to take you to.

These questions and their respective answers are things that are going through your parents head, but it is so much easier to just say 'no' than for them to find out the facts themselves. Finding a way to present this information to your parents will no doubt help your situation.

Try explaining that you want to play a particular sport, give a reason, and make a deal saying that you will keep your grades up or you will be pulled from the team. Do NOT say anything about "but billy's mom is letting him ..." or "all my other friends... " That's not a reason. Say that you feel you would be good at it, and it would open up doors for you in your future (ie: for college ).

Most importantly, remain calm and resist the need to react to the situation or the negative responses you might receive. If you can show your parents that you are a mature person, maybe they will allow you to do more mature things.
